Steve Coffee takes in the vistas from Mauna Kea, on the Island of Hawaii .  Mauna Loa looms in the background.  1/11/2008

My mission is simple:  I want to share my photographs in hopes that I can inspire people to love the great outdoors, protect its resources, and  pass on a legacy of stewardship to future generations.  I know it sounds kind of cliche' but this is important to me.  Today's world needs more environmental awareness, I know I am not alone in this sentiment.

"Be the change you to see in the world" is how Mahatma Gandhi said it.

My photographs are simple also.  They are produced and reproduced by modern yet standard mean, a camera you can buy in almost any store, prints you can order by phone, prepared by people you never meet except in cyberspace.  I'm not that different from anyone else.

One way I am very different is my belief that the most important part of any photograph is the imagination that inspired it , the grey matter between your ears that saw the picture before you took it, the light that appeared intuitively and serendipitously at the same time, the friends who laughed or disbelieved or decided to come along when you planned an expedition to capture a scene you knew you would  never see again.

This website is heavy on photographs from the Island of Hawaii where I lived for 18 years.  As I write new chapters in my life I plan to slowly add vistas from new locations.  Currently I am living in Santa Fe, New Mexico..

Art Wolfe has said "Photography is inseparable from the land".  I find that this statement fits my vision exactly.  Like all good art the prints are excellent reminders of " ... a world of perfection, beyond chance and change .. " (quote by Hoyt Rodgers)
